Molly sat on her bed and smiled. Chantelle had just signed into msn and she was ready to have a long chat with her. Molly hadn’t seen Chantelle in weeks since she’d gone on ‘holiday’ to Butlins. She heard her front door click, but she didn’t care. If her mother wanted to go out then it was her problem. Although she knew that there would be whispered arguments later when her Dad found out. He was always telling her Mum to grow up. But Ronnie hadn’t been the same ever since Rose and Jackie had died. None of them had
Molly fumbled in her pocket as she clicked on the picture of her best friend, and found a packet of bubble gum. It hadn’t even been hers originally. She’d ‘borrowed’ it from Shaun Dimble during Maths class, and hadn’t returned it. Shaun wouldn’t mind, she knew he had a massive crush on her. Molly looked down at the packet she was currently holding in her hands, it was bubblegum flavored bubblegum, she smiled a bit too broadly.
‘Hiyaa Babessssssss’ chimed the new message from Chantelle. Molly ignored it and popped out a square of the gum; she threw it into the air and caught it in her mouth. She bit down slowly at first and as it softened she began to chew at a more regular pace. Molly loved the taste of it in her mouth, and the feel of it too. It reminded her of kissing boys. Though she tried not to think about that too much as it was putting her off her gum.
She started to think about who invented gum, and why it was so enjoyable. But she was interrupted from her thoughts by two things. Her laptop vibrating as Chantelle sent her a nudge, and the sound of a whirring engine outside. She shook her head and opened her eyes wondering what that noise was. Setting her status to ‘Away’ she jumped off her bed, slipped on her pumps and ran outside. There was a sudden rush of wind and then there was silence yet again. As she ran down the stairs of her block, she heard a loud bang from somewhere above her. She sighed and rolled her eyes. She’d forgotten to put the door on its latch. But as she was locked out she might as well go investigating. Molly thought this was a good plan, after all, she didn’t expect to ever hear that sound again.
